Proverbs Devotion - Day 3

The Proverbs are not a mere collection “life-hacks” or guaranteed formulas for earthly prosperity. Christians often misuse and misinterpret the Proverbs when approaching them with this view that they promise certainty rather that wisdom in general principles and situations of life. This wonderful book is truly a call to wisdom which at its core is an invitation to submit our entire lives to the sovereign, covenant-keeping God.

Perhaps the most famous verses from the entire book of Proverbs are found in this chapter today and that is where I want to spend our time meditating today. It is easy to view verses 5 and 6 and make them “life verses” or memory verses without truly spending time reflecting on what is being said. When the writer of Proverbs commands us to not lean on our own understanding, he is addressing the reality of human brokenness. By nature, our intellect is skewed by sin which means that our human reasoning is an unreliable guide, inherently prone to self-justification and autonomy. To lean on our own understanding is to elevate ourselves, the finite creatures, above God, the infinite Creator.

As a result, going back to what was mentioned from Proverbs 1, true wisdom is an act of sheer grace that begins with the "fear of the Lord". It is a humble surrender to His Lordship. When Proverbs 3:5 tells us to "trust in the Lord with all your heart", it is a call for a faith that is awakened and sustained by the Holy Spirit. We are called to "acknowledge Him in all our ways," recognizing His providential hand in the mundane, the joyful, and the difficult.

When we are stripped of our self-sufficiency and trust wholly in the finished work of Christ for our righteousness, we find true rest. The promise that God will "make straight your paths" is not a promise of an easy, obstacle-free life. Rather, it is the assurance that every step of your journey is ordained by sovereign grace and leads to the ultimate destination of eternal communion with Him. So, as you reflect today, ask yourself are you currently "leaning on your own understanding" instead of resting in God’s sovereign providence and wisdom?
